With Christmas right around the corner I have compiled a list of suggestions for the runner/triathlete/fitness enthusiast on your list. While there are many things that will not appear on the list, I have tried to include those things most sought after and/or talked about by participants year round. Things they may not buy themselves, an ?I wish I had? or ?I should get? list.
Stocking Stuffers:
Running hat - Should be non-canvas. These usually have a built in sweatband, are reflective and are machine washable.
Bodyglide ? A non-greasy skin lubricant to prevent chafing and blisters.
Running socks ? Any make.
Magic gloves ? Those 99-cent cheapies that stretch to any size.
Sunglasses ? Should fit well but not rest on the cheeks to reduce fogging.
Race number belt ? An elastic belt that holds a race number to save pinning it to clothing.
$20 - $40:
Fanny pack ? Should hold at least one water bottle and have a pocket for food or extras.
Bento box ? Sits on the crossbar of your bicycle to hold food, money or cell phone.
Aero bottle ? Sits between the areo bars of your bike to drink from instead of squirt bottles.
Books ? Any books related to their chosen sport are always appreciated. John Stanton?s book ?Running Start to Finish? is great for beginners while ?I run therefore I am?Nuts? are a great read for anyone.
Music ? Any music that gets their motor running.
Runners World Calendar ? Provides 365 days of inspiration as well as tons of tips and hints.
Subscription to a magazine ? Runners World is full of great information and lots of motivation, particularly for beginners and women. Running Times is for the hard-core runner with more technical articles and lots of race results as well as race listings. Trail Runner Magazine is targeted to trail runners but is full of beautiful pictures and lots of tips and hints for roadrunners as well. Triathlete magazine is the Runners World of tri magazines while Inside Triathlon is more technical and results oriented.
Nutrition ? Energy bars, gels or drinks by the case or individually.
Ear Warmers or hats, neck or face warmers ? All say, ?I love you? on a cold winter day.
$40 - $100:
Fleece ? Essential for layering up. New styles have thumbholes and longer sleeves to accommodate pulling hands in on cool mornings.
Running Jacket ? Buy for spring and fall knowing your athlete can add a fleece for winter running. You don?t want waterproof or the jacket won?t breathe, look for water-resistant and the more reflective the better.
Long Underwear ? Base layers, bottom and top with extra thickness over vital areas to reduce windburn.
Polar Heart Rate Monitor ? A HRM should be as required as running shoes. The entry-level BEAT model is the best bet for most users.
Gift certificates for massages and pedicures are a welcome treat for athletes as are foot creams, soft slippers and sandals for apr?s activity. Stores to check out online are
