Well I was a little disappointed to see that no one else (Jane/ Cathy) had posted a full race report, but I suppose you were all to busy filling in the rest of you triathlon  laugh.  So I guess I'll be the first.
It was a beautiful day, which is a bit unusual for this race but I wasn't complaining.  The six of us started off at our agreed upon pace in the midst of 6000+ runners (Jane, Heather,Petra Sue, Ryann and myself).  At km 4 the porta potties were calling so that left Petra, Sue and myself.   It was pretty uneventful, but enjoyable, although we did have to stop and wait for a train, which took a lonnnggg time to go by, and Petra was really thinking of stopping and picking up articles of clothing along the way, so if any of you receive gloves for Christmas, she got a great deal on them  wink
So we made it too the 15km mark with Sue and Petra dragging me that last km, and met up with the rest of our group, Patti,Beth, Cathy and Tracey (Heather's partner).  Sue and Cathy traded chips so fast I didn't even get to wish Cathy goodluck, she was off like a rocket!  I got to have a little break waiting for Jane, Heather and Ryann, then they showed up and we were off again for 15km more.
The 2nd 15k was pretty much like the first although much hillier, and less articles of clothing on the ground, and I think the 2nd half had cuter cops too.  Jane was going to fake an injury to get this one cops attention but we kept her going, and I'm sure he was checking us out as he kept riding past us.  So we made it up the  killer hill, had the best cheering section outside this funeral home, didn't get laid to rest in any of the cemeteries, and made it past the grim reaper.  Then it was the final 3km all down hill, where we made up a lot of time, and next thing you know we were on the jumbotron at Copp's Coliseum!  It was a good run made all the better by great company along the way!  Thank you very much ladies!

Janet

P.S I still expect full reports from the rest of you runners!

Well, I just spent half an hour writing a race report and then lost it all!  Just by accidentally pressing that back arrow!   angry evil

I have to get to bed, so I will re-write it tomorrow Janet!!  And Cathy's internet is down as she lost her telephone line.  So she will have to post tomorrow from someone else's computer!

In the meantime, everyone can check out Adam's race photos at www.adampaulin.ca.  Here is a direct link to the page that has the album on it:

My re-written race report should be up tonight.  If anyone is interested, you can order copies of the photos through Adam's website.  I haven't tried it yet, so am not sure how it works but if you have questions, I am sure he would be pleased to help you.

Great race report Janet, you pretty much said it all.  The second 15k sound pretty interesting, haha, maybe I should try them next year.
Sandy, I'm not sure what my time was, both Sue and I forgot to stop our watches, we figure around 1:41 or 1:42.

Jane's ATB Race Report - WARNING -- Really LONG!

After losing my last night?s post, Heather has suggested to me that I write them in Word and then copy them into the post and I won?t lose them again.  My daughter is brilliant!

Well, considering that I haven?t felt great for the past five weeks or so, and the fact that I had dreams all Saturday night about running in the dark, with a map, and not being able to find the proper route and not being able to finish, I was happy just to see that big inflatable finish line!!!  I really wasn?t sure if I was going to be able to do the whole 30K and it was nagging at me from inside ? you know, that little voice that says ?You might not do it, you might DNF, you might need to bail? and you just try and shut it out.  I figured unless things got REALLY bad, I could always walk.

Race day dawned and it was beautiful out.  What a change from last year when we had freezing rain over night and mixed rain and snow for the run!  It sure was a good thing that they changed the finish line to the inside of Copps Coliseum to avoid the bad weather this year!  Heather, Petra, Cathy and I went down to Tim?s for breakfast.  It sure felt strange to be sitting in Tim?s with our running friends and eating BEFORE running!  We met up with the rest of the group in the lobby ? except for Dave!  Dave, I don?t know where you ended up, and I thought we were supposed to be on the 2nd floor, but I guess it was the first.  I looked up there but didn?t see you!!  I even wondered if you had made it out of your room after all your carbo-loading on Saturday.

We made our way to the start line which was crowded ? we checked out the speedy Kenyans and the fast white guys at the front.  There was Jutta right in the thick of them!  I was excited that I got to wish her luck ? I am sure that I was partly responsible for her great performance!!   rolleyes  wink  Rather than squeezing in next to her (it was pretty crowded up there), we decided to make our way to the back of the pack.  After all, isn?t it better to be doing the passing instead of getting trampled by speedy runners?

When the gun sounded, we were off ? well, eventually after three minutes!  The weather was glorious.  Much better than we could have even wished for.  Quite warm sometimes, and a cool breeze sometimes.  It made it hard to know what to keep on or take off, but I am definitely not complaining!

The first 15K went pretty fast.  Heather, Ryann and I ended up together, after making a bathroom stop.  I was amazed at how fast the women were getting in and out of those port-a-potties.  Sandy, Ryann actually reminded me to gel when she said that she had to at 7K!  When we got to Beach Blvd we took another pit stop at the porta-potties and continued on.  I like this street because of all the different houses on it.  I don?t think Heather and Ryann appreciated them as much as I did as they didn?t seem to think they were all that special!

We reached the 15K point where Janet, Patti, Beth and Heather?s partner, Tracy, were waiting for us.  We took off and immediately came to the lovely bridge ? the one with the massive holes and you can visualize getting your foot stuck in one of those holes and possibly losing your leg!  Or at least landing on your face.  It is like the Baker?s Island bridge but about 10 or 20 times longer!  We made it across there and ran along a boring stretch of highway until we hit the area where the ?well off? people live.  I ran with Heather's partner,Tracy, for awhile as I wanted to visit with her.  However, she was full of vim and vigour and after a hill or two, I realized that there was no way I would be able to keep up to her pace and live to finish the race.  So I walked and waited for Janet, Patti and Beth to catch up, which didn?t take long as they weren?t far behind.  We ran for awhile, even sang a song to entertain ourselves ?There she goes just a running down the street, singing do-wah-diddy-diddy-dum-diddy-do?.  The people living in this neighbourhood were great!  They even set up their own water stations with water in Disney cups and provided cut up bananas and oranges.  I wonder who was the lucky person who got to clean up THAT mess all over the road???  We ended up separated from Patti and Beth as Janet and I walked through a water station, and Patti and Beth kept running.  Yes, the cops were definitely cuter on the last half and we made sure we thanked them all, even they WERE getting paid.  We thanked everyone that cheered for us or offered us a cup of water or Gatorade.  Volunteers told us we were doing a good job and we told them that they were doing a good job too and thanked them for making the race possible.  A lot of them were high school students and they really seemed into making sure they did a good job for us.

Janet and I steadily made our way past the funeral home with the party going on outside, past the crematorium and down into the valley, past the little guy with the boom box playing "We will, We will Rock you" and across the wood bridge to the bottom of THE HILL.  We had already decided we would walk it.  I was so busy telling her about Bart Yasso, the guest speaker at the pasta dinner, that I almost missed some of our Running Mania friends cheering for us half way up the hill.  We made it to the top and knew we only had less than 4K to the end.  Passed the grim reaper, who seemed to be luring us to go with him but we resisted!  It was ironic that we passed three cemeteries in the last 15K of the run.

With 2K left, and the red C of the Copps Coliseum in view, Janet and I started talking about what parts of our bodies were hurting on us and how they felt.  Then we switched the conversation to what we were going to do at the finish line.  Would we hold up our arms?  Lock our hands?  Sprint the last few meters?  We agreed we would cross together, and we probably wouldn?t be up to much of a sprint.  Other than that, we were too brain dead to make a decision, so we decided to go with what felt good at the time, and if anyone was close to us (they weren?t) we would make sure we got in clear view of the cameras.

As we came to the last turn, we saw Petra, Sue and Cathy cheering us on!  Girls, it was great to see you out there!  It really helped get me over the finish line.  We continued on ? it seemed that they were going to make us run around the whole building, when all of a sudden they directed us down into this deep dark hole!  Were we going down into a parking garage?  Because it sure felt like it.  My left IT had been twitching for the last 1.5K.  Well, I hit that steep ramp and it just starting twanging!  And then the right one joined in!  The guy at the bottom of the ramp was laughing as I yelled ?OW, OW, OW? every time each foot hit the slope of that ramp!  Then we were around the corner and in the arena.  I don?t know for sure what we did at the finish line ? I think we held hands and held them up, but can?t say for sure.  It felt like I was jumping around, but I couldn?t have been as my legs just hurt too much for that.

We made it through the chute, got our medals, and started to look for Janet?s Mom and Heather.  Heather promptly told me that they ran out of food, which strangely didn?t concern me too much.  I guess because I just eaten that yucky recovery gel and I knew I had lots of food in the hotel room.

I enjoyed this run ? mainly because of the people I ran with and the people I met there.  It wasn?t my best time, running wise, but that isn?t really important.  Some day I may try to beat my last year?s time but this wasn?t the time for me to do it.  Instead, I got to run with Heather on her first 15K and see her really feel good about it.  I think that it is apparent that we were happy by the photo that Adam took as we were approaching the handover point.  And I got to run, and laugh and sing with Janet for almost all the last half, and Patti and Beth for a part of it.  And I will remember the laughing and singing and friendships long after the finishing time has faded from my memory.

OK - now I have written my novel, where is everyone else's reports?  I thought for sure we would have Dave's by now -- he did awesome from the look of the Sportstats website!!  Maybe the fig newtons worked after all Dave!

Dave, I am disappointed that we didn't get to hook up while we were there!  Next year we are planning on getting there earlier, like you did, so we have more time to spend at the sports expo (I know, bad move spending hours shopping at the sports expo!).  You had an amazing result, considering that you reacted badly to the fig newtons!  By the way, I picked up the shirt for you after we finished.  When did you want to get it?

In case anyone is interested to read about ATB in the Hamilton Spectator here is a link to the two page article!

1st Page:

2nd Page:

Also, if you check www.aroundthebayroadrace.com they have an apology for running out of food.  Heather and Tracy got a different medal (generic without the year on it) than everyone else got for the relay.  Tracy e-mailed the Race Director and 15 minutes later she had an e-mail from him asking for their addresses so that they could be sent one with the 112th Anniversary on it!  That's a pretty good response!

Well run fanatics!!!,another day running the bay has past, it was a great race to be sure!, the weather Gods were with us, and the wind wasn't even a problem this year, ..perfect..had a bit of trouble with my pre-race dinner { prune newtons}, should of known better...but the event went off great. As i was running ,i was thinking of what this meant to me as a runner, you train for it, you buy your way in, you pay for your room, gas, food...etc , etc, but all that washes away when the gun goes off, its just you and the road, all that you`ve learned about nutritional intake, pacing yourself, watching your form for running economy, all this has to become a second nature when you run, all the concentration, time keeping, it just seems to mean different things to everybody, sort of the "why do you run thing", but as i was talking to the volunteers and doing high five`s to a long line of spectators, i was wondering what it must mean to them, i mean they are no stranger to the race, but they still come out, are we a sign of spring?, like unravelling the garden hose, and sweeping off their walkways, do we represent a spring parade to these people?, possibly so, but i think they like it, as much or if not more than we do running it, its a race, but more like a double edged festival to welcome the spring, and give all their neighbors a reason to get out and socialize with eachother, and us as well, i had mini conversations at the aid stations, and i managed to get a smile, and a couple of chuckles from some of these people, this also means something to me, i enjoy the people on route, i was running my best but still managed to have fun as well, festival, parade, or just plain race day, call it what you like, cuz it all means something differently to everybody, but we all love it all the same...Tks for your time, and how was your day??..David Storey. grin

Here are a few photos from my camera from this past weekend:

Preparing for the race:

Jutta didn't know I was taking this photo -- I think she was focusing on the road she was about to take!

Heather and Ryann motoring along....

And another one of them

Janet -- just before hitting the bridge that lead to THE HILL

The bridge -- we had quite a nice little conversation with the girl who was crossing it.

Starting up the hill -- now does that look any worse than the Batawa ski hill?

Janet making her way up the hill

It looks like I am going DOWNHILL.  But actually the hill was just a little too easy for me.  So I decided to turn around and walk up backwards while Janet took my picture from a little lower.  Now THAT killed the calf muscles!!

Okay, here goes my race report... Sorry it took so long... I have been quite busy with going back to school..

I was quite nervous the morning of the race. I had an okay sleep. I usually never have problems sleeping but I did toss and turn a bit throughout the night. We woke up at 6:30 and got ready and off to Tim Horton?s we went for some breakfast, a bagel with cheddar cheese and chocolate milk. Yum! But since I was nervous I didn?t really feel hungry but ate it anyways. Then we went back to the hotel to get our race bibs and water belts. Over to the Coliseum to meet my relay partner (Tracy) to give her my post-race clothes and nutrition. We then walked over to the start line. This was the biggest race I have ever run so the start line made me a bit nervous. The race started and it took us almost three minutes to get over the start line. As soon as we got moving, I started to relax and I was feeling great. We took it nice and slow so we didn?t go out too fast. What a beautiful day! Our coats were off before the 1K mark. We took a bathroom break at 4K. Between 4K & 11K feels like a total blur to me. I remember my mom talking about some of the houses but besides that, I was flying and I was in a dream. At the 11K mark we took another bathroom break. The next 4K went well but I could feel I was starting to get a little tired. We took a couple walk breaks but by the time we got to the 15K mark I felt I could have kept on going.  This made me feel great!  When we got to the 15K mark, I gave Tracy our chip and off she went with my Mom, Janet, Patti and Beth.

Overall, I really enjoyed the race.  It was good practice run for the half in May.  Everything worked out well for me so there is nothing that I will change for Mississauga.  I also tried my first recovery gel and it didn't taste as bad as my mom said it would!
