So, here we are 10 days into 2006. By now we should have set at least one goal for this new year, whether it is running related, some other fitness activity, or a personal goal. Just last night a person (no names but her initials are E.H.) was asking about our goals for this year. So I thought I would start a thread so that people can post their goals, and then if Sandy keeps it kicking around for another 355 days, we can see if we achieved what we planned or if we revised our goals as the year went along.
For me, I haven't really planned anything lofty like running a marathon or super long distances.
First, I am looking forward to running with Heather as she accomplishes one of her goals, but I will let her post that.
I want to continue working on this heart rate training and maybe see if I can improve my times in a couple of races that I had done in previous years. This will probably be during a couple of 10Ks - have to pick them still though. And maybe see if I can take a bit of time off my Around the Bay time. I also want to try and fit in another trail run -- just need to fit it in my schedule and not crowd it too much so I don't get injured!
Since I am turning 50 this year, I should do something awesome to mark this big event, but I am not sure exactly what that should be? Anyone have any ideas? And no, I am NOT goofy enough to do Goofy!

Hello,Jane I was looking at the general discussion, and saw goals for 06. It's about running for a long time I try to break 20 minutes in 5krun. Road run or on the track. I came very close on track 5000m,at the ontario specail olympics summer games 20.01. I don't know why but that is my goal for a long time. I have a feeling it's soon.at my running club in Kitchener,Waterloo lastnight my coach put me up in thrid fast group there's about 4 speed groups,I did very good staying up with the fast ppl in that group hopefuly that would help me get faster. Once again that's my goal for 06,for running.

You know what Derek? I bet this will be the year that you break that 20 minute mark!! It sounds like you are working hard to accomplish that!

Good goal Derek.
Jane it doesn't have to be something huge and spectacular. Is there a race you have always wanted to do like the Melissa race out west or some other one that has intrigued you at any distance? Maybe a relay so that we could all be involved in your celebration. maybe we could make something up and do it around here. Your birthday is in Oct right?
We'll work on it.

My goals for 2006 are to run my first half marathon in May and to do 25K at Run for the Toad in October. I would also like to do many others races as well to better my times but those are my main goals for the year.

Love your smiling Daisy Cathy. 50, 10k just doesn't seem like enough or maybe that's just me!! Ok Jane, here are 2 thoughts. Check out www.rtbrelay.com. We already have me, Elizabeth and Lynda. Maybe we could do the "Jane celebrating 50 - 50 mile (or 50k) bike ride", only beacuse I know you wouldn't go for a 50 mile run, or even a 50k. Then have a dinner after that. If you want to add another 20k we could ride from Trenton to Kingston (100k) have lunch/dinner and have someone drive us home. Wind at our back....... Think about it.

I looked at the website, and it looks very interesting.... Does this mean I couldn't do Run for the Toad though?? :( I want to do both!! I want it all!!! Heather would be interested too if she could run as little as possible or be a crew person, if there is one or two. A bike ride would be fun too.... Or what about that half wit half??? http://pretzelcitysports.com/_wsn/page7.html Not only that, it is in August -- wow, I don't know about anyone else, but I don't have any other run scheduled in August --- and it is in Reading PA which means that we could hit the factory outlets too!! I won't be 50 yet, but close to it!

This is getting more and more interesting. Where were you guys when I turned 50? Guess I have to wait till I am 60.... But it will have to be cold weather activities though. It is not always nice in January for sure. Might have to make mine a polar dip.... but I regress we have lots of time to decide mine.
Count me in in whatever you decide to do. You must know me by now, I will try anything once if not even twice. Snowshoeing anyone????

Hi Everyone, it's been awhile, I know. Away on holidays, and working alot. Still made time to run... Oklahoma is amazing place to run in this time of year! So, as soon as my work starts to slow down, I'd like to plan my first 10K race, I'm thinking I'll be ready by end of March or April. My goal this year wasn't just the 10K, I'd like to go bigger. Do you think a newer person to running, like me would be able to do a half-marathon? I was thinking the PEC one. Where do I start? Is there any good links that would have some good advise? Should I get a personal trainer? I know nothing of gel packs, endurance training etc. Help. Happy New Year everyone.

Hmm Jane, Good question. I always have a hard time deciding on what to do. There's so many cool races out there and I want to do them all! ( I know I have all kinds of time but I hate to miss anything). So for this year what I have decided on so far is ATB (but I might have to change that to the Seaton Trail Run, and I think they're too close to do both), becuase I am going to run Mississaauga Marathon again and hopefully break my time of 4:30. Those are my big plans so far, but then comes summer and I'd like to do a full Tri this year, with maybe a half ironman next year. This fall I think my mom and I are going to walk a half marathon (looking at doing Vegas, a little gambling, sunshine, and being with my mom achieving one of her goals priceless). Then there's run for the Toad, and then that race that you were mentioning for Jane's 50th looked interesting Sandy. So just too little year and not enough time. Time wise I'd like to run a 5k all out just to see if I could get under 30 minutes as I've never raced a 5k before. Sooo there's my goals for 2006 sort of. Well at least until May.

Wow Sandy, that website DVD download looks pretty awesome, intriguing too. I'm so new to running (year into, but addicted), yet so open to new things. Would you guys really consider putting a team in? Looks intense. But, I'm up for any challenge. I would even book my valuable time off for something like that!

Well, seeing as you all spilled your guts in "Why do you run?" I guess I should tell you my goals for this year. It's been my goal to qualify for Boston since November of 2004. I'd also like to break 40 minutes in the 10k again. It's been almost 20 years now since I last did it, and I'm so close to doing it again, it's just killing me. I don't expect to be able to run like an 18 year old again, but I'd still be almost 4 minutes slower than that glorious day in 1988.
So, the next step is, how?
For the marathon, I've got a plan that starts in 2 weeks for a run at London's Forest City Marathon this spring.
For the 10k things aren't so clear. I'm hoping that my marathon training will give me the endurance I've been lacking to maintain the pace I need to get it done. The good news is, I could race a 10k just about every weekend all spring and fall. Something that's a lost harder to do for the marathon goal.
This may sound strange, but I think my 10k goal might be more important to me than Boston. After all, it's hard to miss what you've never had, but harder yet to give up something you miss. That thing for me is the speed of my immortal, teenaged self.
Young, powerful, fearless, unbreakable, determined, unwavering, and... me.
Mike
