85 miles in 22 Hours, Not Quite a Speeding Bullet

On May 27 I turned 40 and to celebrate decided to run a 100 miler. The course I chose this year was Sulphur Springs in Ancaster which is a 20k loop done eight times through a conservation area. Logistically it is a great race as it is easy to plan for drop bags with clothes, food, lights, etc, the organizers are able to provide numerous aid stations and the small loop is spectator friendly, perfect for late race pick-me-ups. This is an undulating course with over 13000 feet gain and loss of elevation, of course all the ups are into aid stations and the downs are out. With a field of 35 entrants this is the largest ultra in Ontario, however once spread out over the 20k it feels more like a solitary training run. 50 mile, 50k, 25k and 10k races are run on the same day at later times which increases the odds of fellow runner sightings.
My race went well with consistent laps through 100k. My mini goal was to complete 100k in 15.5 hours which would match my time from last year, so was thrilled to cross the 100k threshold in 14 hours. At this point I picked up a pacer, basically my hall monitor who was responsible for making sure nutrition went in, waste came out and that I continued to put one foot in front of the other. Not eating enough was my eventual downfall causing me to pull at 85 miles and 22 hours. Yes I have already begun planning for next year?s race because when you don?t cross that finish line the race just doesn?t seem ?
