Drafting is the act of moving close behind another athlete so as to benefit from the reduction in air pressure created behind the athlete ahead. In triathlon an athlete can benefit from drafting by tucking into the ?draft? thereby saving their own energy while allowing another to do the work. While drafting in the swim and run are legal it is hard to reciprocate the benefit to the draftee in the water so be respectful. In the run it is good practice to trade off ?pulling? with other runners. Drafting on the bike during an event is punishable by time penalties however with as much as a 30% energy savings it is easy to see why it can be beneficial to draft during training. Draft etiquette has a lead rider that all other riders tuck behind getting as close to each other as they are comfortable. The closer they get, the more draft benefit there is, although the draft can be experienced up to five to six feet away from the wheel in front of you. Riders take turns ?pulling? and being ?pulled?. When the draftee gets tired, or on a time interval, s/he pulls over allowing the drafters to move ahead as the draftee tucks in at the back of the line, now becoming a drafter. Rotating through the line permits the whole to move along faster than the individuals. Each rider in line ensures the rider directly behind stays with the pack.
