Ironman; 3.8k swim, 180k bike, 42k run and 17 hours to complete it anyway you can. What drives someone to want to attempt this race? The months of training, time from your family, persistent fatigue, potential for injury and the cost...oh the cost. An Ironman race should not be registered for lightly. To begin with there is planning involved in just getting registered whether it?s organizing a year in advance to volunteer or setting up camp in front of your computer the moment registration opens. Second is the cost. Anywhere from $625.00 to almost $900.00 plus fees and that doesn?t include travel costs if you must be onsite to register. This all before you spend one penny on equipment or one day training which can require 30 to 52 weeks depending on your starting fitness. Finally there is race day, potentially 17 hours of blood, sweat and tears; literally. If you are thinking this is something you may want to do my advice is to go and watch an Ironman. It is motivating, frightening, will give you perspective and inspire you beyond words. The highs and lows of racing are experienced in bright Technicolor by all who watch, 17 hours of ?The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.? You will find yourself getting emotionally involved in athletes you have never met but watch struggle to make the swim cut off, cheering them in as the announcer counts down to the last few minutes of time. You agonize with the last few stragglers as they miss the bike cut off but are permitted to finish the final few miles before their race is prematurely concluded and you find yourself smiling as triathletes of all ages, sizes and abilities head for the finish line to conclude their journey. Then you find yourself in the sign up line bright and early the next day ready to begin your own journey. On July 24 local Ironmen raced their way to the finish line in perfect weather in Lake Placid. Jeff Walsh completed his fourth Ironman crossing the line in 45 place overall, seventh in his age group and first Canadian age grouper with a PR of 10:02:39. Eric Lindenberg in his second Ironman also set a PR with 12:45:46 as Bill Saunders raced his way toward an age group Kona spot missing it by moments but placing second in his age group in 13:41:51. Monday morning there were 10 locals who had volunteered at this year?s race in line bright and early signing up for Ironman Lake Placid 2012 ready to experience their own thrill of victory.

Jean-Philippe Pellerin raced the Triathlon de Quebec (750/20/5) in1:07:12 finishing seventh overall and first in his age group while Edward Kooistra (47:02) and Melissa Barrett (1:03:02) participated in the Durham Quarter and Eighth Marathon (10.549k). At the 84th Tely 10 Mile Road Race Joy Petch crossed the line in 1:26:38 and was joined by husband Bill Petch (1:26:39), Joshua Hollett (1:06:22), Denise Holloway (1:26:35), Lorrie Ralph (1:39:12) and Christine Blagdon (2:09:37).

David,
If you are trying to register now online, it looks like general entry spots are sold out. Only the Ironman foundation spots are left now. (i.e. mo money$$$)
Peace Peter

Hi Peter,
No, I am pre registered but we are rquired to go on line starting today to register. I went to LP and volunteered this year with the other Tri and Run gang. It was amazing to watch the athletes. I volunteered in the bike transition area with Greg and Kristy. We also rode the bike course one loop excluding the turn around parts. There sure are a lot of hills!

Well after many tries with the url I had no luck. Greg emailed the url he used and well I'm in. Thanks Greg!
So Sandy in your opening statement you said training can be from 30 weeks to 52 weeks depending on fitness level. Where do I fit in? LOL.
Hopefully it is somewhere in between.
See you all at the lake.

I'm in! Took forever to answer all the questions, and I only answered the star ones, (I was going to put fo my personal accomplishments something outrageous, but then thought "I have riden with Dennis Hills " was accomplishment enough), especially since he turnd pro this year!
