Sydenham on Fire!

For those who didn't make it out to Sydenham on Sunday, you sure missed a hot day of events! The weather was scorching and gorgeous all at the same time. Somersault presented a wide range of events from 5km run, to Try a Tri, Sprint Duathlon and for those who really wanted to brave the heat Olympic Distance Tri.
I took part in the Duathlon (2km-20km-5km). This was my second race on my Quintana Roo from Tri and Run and after a few months of playing with the perfect riding position I think I got it right. Had a great first run, a strong solid bike, and a TERRIBLE second run! Nothing to blame on that but myself on this day. I under estimated how much nutrition my body was using and able to process in the heat and for the first time ever experienced the Bike-Run bonk. Got off the bike and had way too much water accompanied by a few GU Chomps sloshing around making the first 4km of the 5km run a hard task and very uncomfortable. For anyone who has ever been in this position you know exactly what I mean. I was probably 25-30 seconds slower running off the bike than I would normally be and finished 2 mins off my goal time for this race as a result. Can't complain too much, had a great time, a great day and learned a valuable lesson on how my body fuels in that kind of heat.
I know there were quite a few participants from the Quinte area in the various events so I'd love to hear how you felt about the heat today. All in all, another great weekend for a race and another well put together event from the Somersault crew!

Great race report! Yes the heat can do awful things to the digestive system when mixed with speed. Congratulations to all who participated in the first real heat and humidity of the summer...not an easy task!
