Hey Patti,
this is the night marathon/HM in Ottawa I was telling you about. Run along side triathletes as they finish their day.

I have a question for the Ironman people.  If you are starting the marathon portion of Ironman, do you really want to have people who are fresh, running the marathon with you?  Would that make it harder?  Or would it motivate you to keep going?

I know when I did my first marathon at NCM, the half marathon people started later than us, and just past the half way mark, we got overrun by them.  It was like a stampede that you could hear coming.  I didn't like it.  These people were about 8K into their run and I was at 29K and it just made me feel like I was running slower.  And they were weaving in and out amongst the marathoners and I found it dangerous because at that point our reaction time was not the best.

Does this make sense to anyone else beside me?  LOL

Good question Jane. I completely see your point but I don't know if I would even really pay attention to it. I think I would tend to dismiss them when I realized they were not doing Ironman.  Similar to when the 10 and 25kers were melding with the ultra runners at sulphur.

But that was earlier in the ultra runners' event.  They were melding with us when they were only a few hours into their runs.  This would be after doing the 4K swim and 180K bike.  I just remember how I felt in Ottawa where I was starting to struggle and maybe not be as alert as I could be, and then this herd of what felt like buffalo coming at me from behind.  I am not sure what the logistics will be at this event, so maybe it won't be a problem.   Do you think they will have a different finish line?  And if it is the same, does this take away some of the "special" finish line aura for the Ironman people?  Just curious, as I never plan to do an Ironman, and I am just wondering how other people feel about it.

My guess I doubt it is a "big event" so there shouldn't be a herd. Also I think it "may" have been put in place so someone could run with there Iron spouse or friend. Just a thought.

I remember doing half version a few years back and it was great because my wife could do support. handing me "MY" bottles on the bike and run when I came past.

Peace
Peter
