Some ride &*%%^*.....7k in and had a blowout, and found out the spare tube had a through and through puncture, so needless to say the ride was done for the day.
Luckily I had a 90 minute run and brand new pair of Gel-Kayano 16's to take it out on   Thumbs Up

So....a question for all you bike people: is it true that tubular's are less prone to "flatting" than clinchers? I understand they are more $$$$, but are they worth it?
Opinions.....??

G'day Greg,

Tubulars typically don't get pinch flats, just the nature of the design, though with proper installation and inflation clincher pinch flats rarely occur. If you ride over something sharp they all go flat. I find for training I usually ride a tougher tire (continental gatorskin) and sacrifice a little rolling resistance and weight. Clinchers are cheaper to change a flat if it's just a tube puncture and you're more likely to get support on a group ride if your spare tube has a whole. As most people carry a spare tube with them. Plus to go to a tubular setup that means a whole new set of wheels. $$$$. It also doesn't hurt to carry a small patch kit as it will fix a hole in a tube when all your tubes end up with holes. A 7km walk back isn't bad, a 50km walk back sucks.  wink

Hope this helps.
Peace
Peter

+1 on the patch kit. I also prefer the convenience of clinchers.
Long walks are no fun in cycling shoes. They wear the crap out of your cleats also!

Hey Greg, I also agree with Pete and Craig......clinchers are the way to go!  Plus you don't want to cut into your race wheel budget!! grin

Thanks for the feedback, guys!! Flats suck no matter how you slice it, but no sense getting all carried away with the solution, I guess. I've been pretty lucky overall so far....just not yesterday! lol
...definitely don't want to be cutting into the race wheel budget, Jeff, you got that right. wink

What? Greg your getting something that makes you go even faster! I will now have to put an engine on my bike just to keep up.  Hopefully this weekend will be nice to get out on the road again. Till Sunday!

Sunday May 8th is Mothers day. I don't know about you but if I skip out on a bike ride and Mother does not get breakfast in bed I may as well keep riding!
