Resolution (re-zoloo-tion): the quality of not allowing difficulties or opposition to affect one?s purpose.
? ? So do you have resolution? ?You probably made a resolution, or was it a proclamation? ?Do you intend to follow through, to make the changes in your life and lifestyle, to ?not allow difficulties or opposition to affect your purpose??
? ? While the New Year has been celebrated since prehistoric times, it has been recognized as January 1st since 153 B.C. by the Romans, who chose this date because it was the day in which the newly elected assumed their positions. ?Throughout time, New Years Day has been recognized as a day to abolish the past through various rites and rituals such as purgation, purifications, exorcisms, parades, firecrackers and as much noise as possible to scare away the dead. ?The New Years Resolution began as an additional method of getting ?out with the old and in with the new?. ?It is where the phrase ?turning over a new leaf? originated.
? ? In the spirit of turning over a new leaf, a large contingent of Quinte runners were in attendance at various Resolution runs country wide which were co-sponsored by the Running Room and the YMCA. ?These fun walk/runs were primarily 5k in length and held either New Years Eve or New Years Day. ?Here in Belleville a group of local runners participated in a 10k fun run, no cost, no timing event also held on New Years Day. ?The Kingston Road Runners Association (KRRA) held its annual 8k Resolution Run on Sunday January 2nd with 149 runners in attendance. ?The idea behind these runs is to start a New Year fresh with health, happiness and friendship as the focus.
? ? So while your goals may or may not include running, they hopefully include health and fitness in some capacity. ?The key to making a successful resolution is to set your goal or goals (purpose), to develop a strategy for change and implementation (not allowing difficulties or opposition) and searching out whatever professional help is required (Doctor, Dietician, Personal Trainer, coach). ?Make a commitment and stick to it no matter what. ?No excuses and no yes, buts. ?Be realistic in setting your goals and even more importantly be patient. ?What has been done can not be undone overnight, in two weeks or sometimes even two months. ?Meaningful change is a process and takes time, implement one change at a time, baby steps. ?Don?t take life so seriously. ?Dr. Seuss proclaimed in his last book, Oh the Places You?ll Go, ?When things start to happen, don?t worry, don?t stew. ?Just go right along. ?You?ll happen too.?
? ? So tip your water bottle in a toast to fulfilled resolutions. ?Best wises for a happy, healthy, prosperous New Year.
