Boston Marathon has announced that in 2013 all qualifying times will go up by 5 minutes across the board. In other words if your qualifying time for your age group is presently 3:45:59 in 2013 it will be 3:40:00 reduced by 5 minutes and without the grace of the 59 seconds that they allow now. They will also be offering a rolling registration at the same time.

So for anyone that has qualified to run 2012 don't hesitate your time stands as is but it may not for 2013.

As we are all painfully aware Boston registration filled up this year in 8 hours and 3 minutes an unprecidented event which took them by surprise as well as the rest of the world. So it was just a matter of time before they sorted it out and made some changes not only to the qualifying times but to the manner in which one registers.

Just thought that I would share this with you.

Well we knew they had to do something.  Do you think this will cause a stampede to get qualified this year for 2012 or do you think people will lose interst?

I think that to run Boston 2012 will be a hustle for interested parties to get qualified somewhere, somehow. I also think that "Boston qualifying" summer marathons will fill up quickly this time around.

After the fiasco this year with registration yes it was a given that qualifying for Boston would change and so it has. Really it is just one more reason to want to run Boston , one more challenge after all that is why we all try to qualify in the first place isn't it!

So while we are discussing Boston this is one race that I personally think should be for qualifying runners only. By this I mean no charity runners/organizations a pure and simple race that the only way you can get into it is if you have done the training and qualified to run it. You cannot buy your way into it.

Any thoughts...?

G'day

I agree all the runners should be qualified runners first, then there is nothing wrong with supporting/promoting your charity after qualifying. Same goes with Hawaii, I realize the history of Hawaii, and it is always supposed to be possible for the "average" person to do but that was way before there was such a pethora of IM races around the world to compete in. So for Hawaii lets make it a real World Championships and have no Lottery and especially celebrity spots. IMHO.

I agree completely.  There are enough marathons and Ironman races that if you want to compete to raise funds for charity then float your boat, but you have no business in the "championship" races if you haven't earned the spot to be there.  I am certain that if I called the NFL and said I would raise a pile of money for charity they still wouldn't let me play in the Superbowl...can you imagine?! grin

It's obvious Rhonda. Sandy would be the Quarterback, calling the plays and keeping all the players working together as a team for the big win. :)

Ha Ha, I have to agree with you guys about the charity and celeb appearances at races.I was pretty disillusioned to find out that people could compete at Ironman Hawaii without having to qualify, just think maybe it keeps peole from pushing to their ful potential, cause if I can't qualify for Boston, I can always run it for charity, no sense in pushing myself that hard when I can "buy" my way in. Me, I'm thinking when I'm 80, as long as I'm still running I may have a chance wink
