I was supposed to do my last long run this past weekend (32k) and then start to taper before marathon in 3 weeks. Ran with pain and tightness that never seemed to loosen up. Cut run short at 18k and now want to know if I can or should try to get that last long run in over the next few days.

I am by no means an expert but I've ran 5 fulls so far...there are so many factors that would affect my decision.  If it were my very first marathon ever I would try very hard  to complete the run.  I think it is important psychologically more than physically to get the run done, barring injury and pain.  now that I've done 5 I know that if I miss that LAST long run I still have done enough training to  finish...but that comes from experience and learning and actually having had a very similar thing happen during my training. Another factor....have you covered a distance that is 32k, or close (e.g 30k) yet in your training?  If so, you have covered enough distance that you will be able to finish the marathon. If I were you and I felt good and strong and had the time to get out and do that long run again without pain and tightness I definitely would.  Again more for psychological benefit more than the physical.  (So much of this training is mental!)  If you do it soon enough you'll still have enough time for an effective taper.

Just my opinion...it's free, and someone asked,  so please I hope no one criticizes me.  It's all based on my past experiences...everyone's different.

Opinions are what I asked for. I like to hear lots of advice and opinions and then take what I want from it. Have done 3 fulls and learn so much more each time. I've done 3 long runs of 30k in this training but would feel better knowing that I had one more 32-35 under my belt before Niagara. Pain and tigtness has been in the hip/hamstring and groin area. Ice, heat, stretching and still doesn't feel quite right. Thanks for your thoughts.

G'day Rhonda,

If you've already done 3 full marathons before than you already know if you've put in the training to do another. One long run is not going to be a much determining factor, I'd be more concerned in dealing with what is causing the tightness and get that worked out. As was said earlier the last long run is more for head games than anything else.

Peace

Wow!  you have 3 long runs of 30K under your belt already!  Its almost as if you have a long run "in the bank" so to speak...You are in great shape I'd say...even without that last 32k run.  I say rest and enjoy the taper and let the body get ready for the big day!  Good luck.

I agree, heal up, rest, enjoy Niagra.  This one's in the bag, you've already done the distance.
