Hi,
I am training for my first half marathon and am new to Belleville. Any suggestions on where I might find some hills in town? (and please don't suggest the bridge. I'm desperately afraid of heights and the sidewalk is on the wrong side of the concrete barrier!!  shocked )

Thanks!

What half are you training for so we might suggest similar terrain?

The Ottawa Fall Colours in October. I live in the east end of Belleville, in the Victoria/Farley area. Not much around here, but if there is something close that I am missing, that would be great.

I've been doing the Bay Bridge the last few weeks and it's not so scarry and the breeze is very nice. Watching the sail boats last week was a great distraction. I've been told to also try the hill at Riverside Park by the 401 where the Canada flag is. Any other suggestions would be a welcome change.

I am terrified of heights but love the challenge of the Bay Bridge.  Once you've gone over it once, it's not hard to hunt it down again.  I don't look over the water.  I watch the sidewalk or the traffic.

I also live in the East end of the City (Old Kingston Road).  There is a pretty medium kind of hill on Herchimer between Victoria Avenue and Station Street.  And quite honestly, near the end of a long Sunday run, sometimes even the hill from the water to Dundas Street on Herchimer seems like a challenge.

Hope this helps!  And if you are looking for a long run buddy, I am training for the County 1/2 at the start of October.  Sunday long runs can be very boring if you're running alone!

Well it far from where you live but Stockdale Road or Telephone Road both in Trenton are awesome rolling hills roads just like the Fall colours route.

Sandy -- you forgot 2nd Dug Hill!

Or you can run up and down King Street, Henry Street, Dundas Street in Trenton, over and over and over again.  But then again that is in Trenton.

How come Belleville doesn't have any hills?  What about out by the Canada flag on the 401?  Is there a path up and down that hill that you can run?  Isn't North Front Street one long gradual hill?

You can run up the hill by my parents condo.  They live on Lane Avenue next to Quinte Gardens and if you want to go in a circle, you can run up Lane, up along Donald to North Front, back down College to Lane again.  But it would get pretty boring to keep doing that over and over again.  But no worse than running on a treadmill.   tongue

Well that leads to another question.... which is better - a long gradual climb like the Bay Bridge or a steeper, shorter climb? Or would it be good to add some variation to hill work and alternate the different kinds of hills?

Silly question Rhonda it's like Chocolate and Peanut Butter they're great on their own but even better mixed together in heaping quantities.

Hardly the same! I absolutely love chocolate and peanut butter! Can't say the same about hill work.

Thanks for the suggestions, much appreciated. I will see if I can find my way to the flower hill. I have run the hill on Herchimer, it's ok. I come from Northumberland County, where I couldn't go 100m without encountering some kind of hill. It might be worth the drive to Trenton to try one of those rolling hill roads. There are definitely some hills on North Front, but I try to avoid running near that kind of traffic. I don't trust people turning to yield.

Thanks for the offer, Kate, but I'm a pretty slow runner, and still have to incorporate walks into runs longer than 12k. I'm not sure if I'd be much of a running buddy! But we are pretty close to each other (I'm on Parrott). You've probably passed me at some point!

Thanks again.
