Just wondering if anyone has information on swimming lessons/classes for adults.  I can swim well enough to not drown,   rolleyes but sure have a long way to go to consider myself a strong swimmer.  Does anyone know if the base or the YMCA offer anything for non-members?

Cheers,

Here is the link to the Y - covers both Belleville and Quinte West.   Not sure about the non-members for swim lessons.

I believe Nancie, Cathy and Petra were/are taking swimming lessons at the base from Nancie's daughter, Meghan.  I don't know any of the details, but if you ask one of them, I am sure they would be more than happy to provide it.

There is a masters swim class at the Y. If you can swim well enough to cover a length or two now (even if your stroke is awful ..... and believe me, as a runner who had to learn how to swim before attempting a triathlon, I can relate to an awful swim stroke), Tiffany should be able to give you some drills and pointers on how to smooth things out and get better. The problem with most "swim lessons" is that they focus on teaching you not to drown (important) but not how to swim correctly.

It's been years since I even attempted to swim using the front crawl.  I think it's been several years since I've even been in a pool!  One of my goals for 2011 is to do a try a tri, so I figured I had better start thinking about learning how to swim properly, lol.

I wouldn't drown, but my stroke is definitely awful!!

I think I'll have to make a few phone calls and see what I can find out.

I'd be interested in whatever you find out too. I would be interested in and adult swim program over the winter. My idea of swimming includes a floating chair with a cup holder. I can swim but definately not strong. The idea of thrashing in open water with dozens of others scares the crap out of me but am definately intrigued but the thought of a tri next year.

I with you there Rhonda.   Floating around the pool with a cool beverage is more my speed (and safety level).  Also, I'm with you on the dozens of people all swimming at the same time,  I'd be the 'floater' at the end because I got kicked in the head or something.

LOL well you girls wouldn't be alone, I'd be right there with ya! The whole open water group swimming both excites me and scares me!

Floating around a pool on a floating chair with a drink by my side   smiley

Swimming in a (lake) with so many other swimmers that I feel like a sardine in a can   sad  I am so  claustrophobic that the thought of swimming close enough to other people that they are grabbing my feet actually frightens me.  Despite my swimming skills, I would probably drown.

I envy all of you du and tri athletes that are not afraid of the water.  Me ... I think I must have been on the Titanic in a former life.

Ok girls the numbers are climbing. We have 3 floaters and a claustrophobic swimmer. I say we jump in someones pool with our swim rings, race to an icy cold beverage at the other end of the pool. Then we have a flip cup competition before jumping on our bikes. We ride around the block once and then run the same route. All participants get a medal and the winner gets first choice of drinks in the cooler. Don't think we can call it an ironman though  laugh

That sounds like fun!  I could even do that if it involved water wings!

I believe the lessons that Heather took a few years ago at the base worked on form and proper strokes.  I thought this was what Meghan was teaching.  I was hoping that either Meghan or one of the ladies who are currently taking them could provide some info.  Nancie is taking them, and I thought she was a pretty amazing swimmer already.

Oh water wings would absolutely be acceptable...along with pool noodles. I think we could organize something like this to occur around the same time the real ironmen and women head out west. Anyone serious about it?

I'm in , I'm in......     Sasperalla's all around (Woody's new root beer drink),  I think I'm addicted....... and we can add
vanilla icecream and have our own rootbeer float as we float around the pool,,,   hell,  maybe do a   ' pool, bike, ride, pool crawl' if we have enough of them.

I have an above ground pool - providing dates, I might be able to spring something,   unless someone has an inground bigger pool.

Depending on when it is (need time for my scrapes and cuts acquired this morning to heal up), I'm in.
Only because water wings and pool noodles are allowed!
