I often take my bike to my daughters soccer practice and go for a ride out Aiken's Rd. I cross 2 sets of very rough rail road tracks on route. My question is...as there any good way to approach rough obsticales such as tracks? Potholes and roadkill can usually be maneuvered around but what do you do when you come to the tracks? Speed, angle of approach, etc...what changes do you make?

With rail crossings it is usually best to cross straight over(90 degrees). If there is no traffic I try and pick the best line possible. I will usually stand up slightly on the pedals so my legs absorb some of the bumps plus this allows one to redistribute their weight a bit. Generally the rougher the crossing the slower I ride over.
Hope this helps.

If you are nervous about crossing rail tracks I would suggest walking your bike across until you get more comfortable

Both Craig and Dennis have great advice. Here is the lousy advice, approach very fast, if it's a single set of tracks then bunny hop them if it's double tracks then just pedal through standing as you are blasting through the tracks as you don't want to give up any positions in the pack and it can be a good place to start an aggressive attack. Though the cost of failure is extremely high for you and your bike, and also relatively painful. Not to mention the risk of laying on the tracks unconscious. Peace Peter

Pete, That is very funny...nothing like bunny hopping on a road bike!!!!! At least with your feet clipped on the pedals you could get a good force to pop the bike up. Cheers, Bryan

Love the advice! I do slow slightly but I figure why not get the bumps over as quick as possible.
