I've got a nasty cold.......ugh! I was healthy all winter, and here I am on June 30th with a brutal cold!! So, I need some advice because I'm not sure how much I should push myself.
I had the sniffles and a sore throat on Sunday, but went for a my long run with the group and felt fine during and after. Monday morning I was exhausted. Hadn't slept well. Was really congested and had a lot of pressure in my head. Went for my scheduled 30 minute easy run and felt ok. Tuesday morning I was feeling a little better, still congested but not quite as bad. It was my off day, so I just chilled at work and didn't run. I felt good and bad throughout the day, but was exhausted by bed time. Today I feel terrible!! My congestion is gone, but now my nose is running like a tap!! My sore throat has turned into a cough that is hurting my chest a little.
So, the question of the day is. To run, or not to run? I hate missing a scheduled run.....so my first thought is to just suck it up.....
Thoughts?
Cheers, Stephanie

Personally I run through a cold unless it gets into the lungs which it sounds like yours has. Running when your immune system is already on overdrive can not only make the cold worse (read: it can get very serious) but can make it last a lot longer. It's hard to beat rest when you are not well.

Isn't there some sort of rule (that I am not very good at following) that says something like "if the congestion is over the shoulders, it's ok to run, if it's below the shoulders it's not" ...

Just read this... as Kate stated.
Question: Can I Run With a Cold? I have a cold and I don't want to take a break from my training. Can I keep running? Answer: When deciding whether you should run with a cold, use the above/below the neck rule. If your symptoms are above the neck (runny nose1, sneezing, sore throat) then, yes, you can run. Just take it easy and don't do any intense workouts. Be sure to be aware of any symptoms such as dizziness, nausea or profuse sweating. You should stop running if any of these symptoms occur. If your symptoms are below the neck (chest congestion, intense coughing, vomiting, diarrhea), let your illness run its course before you start running again. Running under those conditions increases dehydration and may cause more serious issues. You also should never run if you have a high fever. And if your doctor advises you not to run, definitely listen to him or her.
Take off the next few days until you're feeling better. And, don't worry, you won't lose much fitness. You'll be back where you left off in no time.

Could your cold possibly be allergies? My son gets the same runny nose, head congestion and cough this time of year and it sounds like he has a cold but it's seasonal allergies. Just a thought... April

April ... same thought crossed my mind as well. After all. It's called hay fever because you feel sick and, usually, get at least a mild grade fever.

I normally get minor allergy symptoms through the summer, but nothing like this. My cough has now progressed into shortness of breath....and when I cough it sounds like I've been smoking my whole life (which I haven't). I can still take a deep breath, but I feel like it's hard to do so. I didn't run yesterday, and I think I'll take today off as well, unless I feel miraculously better in the afternoon.
Some people at work had a cold that sounds similar to this, and they've been sick for over 2 weeks.....this is not good for my training!

By what you're describing I definately wouldn't be running, you may end up turning this into pneumonia if you already haven't.
Get some rest. and live to fight the good fight another day.
Peace Peter

It was hard to stay off the road today with the weather being so beautiful!!!! But I'm glad I did. I ventured outside most of the day, and played some catch this afternoon which had me in the throws of a coughing fit for a while...yikes.
Peter, and all, thank for the insight and encouraging words. Sometimes I think I need someone else to tell me to take some time off from training instead of the tiny voice in my head, lol.

Stephanie ...
Reminds me of myself a couple of years ago. Waited too long to finally go to the doctor and was WEEKS getting rid of it with antibiotics. I am not one to run to the doctor (obviously), but maybe if you don't improve over the next couple of days, it might be worth a visit.
Just saying ...

I don't like running to the doctor either, but it might be in my best interest. I sure don't want to be sidelined for too long.....I've got training to do!!
I wonder what the universe is punishing me for, giving me this cold!

Could be as simple as picking the wrong grocery cart at the supermarket. You never know.
Don't wait too long to get medical assistance if it doesn't go away on it's own!
