Thanks Jeff. I read one write up that said the avg was 8.3%. It described it like so - Climbing starts off with about 8-9% grade for first three miles. It flattens some around the toll booth area, then resumes at 10% average grade for the next three miles... There was never anything really,really steep, it just never lets up  Jon |

Jon,
Sounds like a great ride.
If you ever get a chance and are on Maui there is a paved road up a dormant Volcano called Haleakula. It's about 58km depending on where you start and climbs from the sugar cane fields at sea level and reaches 10000ft at the top. You seem to ride through several ecosystems from lush fields to thick forest to grassy pastures to scruby growth and rocks to the moon like terrain on top. You know you're getting up there when you see signs along the road telling you to "turn on lights when entering clouds", and my favourite "be careful road ices" in Hawaii??? The switch backs going down were awesome you can actually ride down sections of it faster than you can drive a car.
I read once it's the equivalent of biking up Alp D'huez 4 times in a row. Over 4 hrs going up and little over an hour coming down.
Probably the neatest day on the bike ever.

Jon,
Actually keep practising Triathlon as it was only because I competed at IMH that I was able to go to Hawaii. That way like me you can tour around the islands on your bike on your recovery week after the race.
I don't know what I enjoyed the most Ironman or riding in Maui.

Some of the nicest cycling I've ever done was in Maui around the northWest coast and Hana beach road. (as well a Haleakula) Continually up and down (making most of my local routes look pancake flat)along the shoreline with incredible scenery. Ocean surf, plenty of Waterfalls, and black beaches, talk about surreal. Some of the roads where even out of bounds for rental cars so riding first thing in the morning meant quite peaceful solitude.
