This Tuesday after our regular run Dr Ben Osbourne will be at the store to chat about running injuries and physical things about you that can predispose you to certain injuries.

Everyone is welcome whether you want to run first or not.  Run is 5:45PM Dr Ben will talk from 6:30-7PM.  Tell a friend and bring your questions.

Oh darn it, I have run class that night, otherwise I'd be there. Next time :)

I would so be there if I didn't have boot camp.
Can you say piriformis?  Even after taking almost a whole week off, had a VERY sore slow long run this morning.

Sandy - I'm in North Bay this week, but would have loved to hear him speak.

I've been thinking about talking to you to ask if Ben would be a good resource to keep my back in line while I do my 1/2 training.  Not sure if you recall, but I had some pretty bad back issues last fall (herniated disc in low back).  It's been pretty good, and only gives me a hard time once in a while, but I thought some preventative visits to Ben might be a good idea.  Sara Boggett loved him and recommended him.

Is this anything that makes sense to you as a seasoned runner?  I get pain once in a while if I'm too stiff, so I'm concerned that it might flare up as my mileage increases.

Thanks!

Absolutely.  I think prevention is much better then trying to fix something after the flare up.  Can you say piriformis?  wink  BTW, that won't get any better until you get your pelvis leveled.

Pelvis leveled?  As in I should call an RMT?  I had my usual RMT address this muscle group not even a month ago.  Felt worse for a week and no better than before the deep tissue massage after that.  I was hoping just stretching could help, but I don't think it is.

I know I wait longer than I should to deal with these issues, but without a health plan it adds up on the wallet.  I have to admit that after Sunday's run, all I could think about was the hills on Wolfe Island ... in only a few weeks.  And the fact that I am registered for A Midsummer Night's Run in August and PEC again in October.

Yikes!

Kate,

Advice I had gotten from a good friend and natural health care provider. "Ignore your health and it will go away"

Most of us run/cycle/etc for the health benefits and fun of it. Where do we draw the line to "get in that workout" while in pain or injured or get the problem fixed.

Peace

For me, massage and stretching was the answer to my piriformous woes, but it was 3 visits a week for 2 weeks and lots of stretching...not cheap, but relief (finally).  BTW, I really didn't get any lasting relief until the last session, and they were all very painful.  I think I was actually worse after the first one.

Thanks Peter, Nancy, Mike and Sandy ... why am I afraid that I will have his number on speed dial?

Note to self.  Call the RMT in the morning ... if I scrape the cobwebs of my mind, I know that I have to make this better to be able to keep running.  Or at least to be able to continue to run pain free.

That darn fine line ...

Yes you did, Gloria.  I did the Tuesday morning 8K.  I didn't say I was going to stop running.  I said I wished I could run without discomfort or pain.

I stretched those wonderful piriformis muscles before I headed out the door and it wasn't too bad a run.  Not great, but not too bad either.

And I have an appointment to see Bryan tomorrow at noon   angel

The talk/demonstration was VERY informative.  Now I just have to practice the advice he gave us!!   wink
