Been suffering with a really sore hip/butt. Went for massage last week and have also been sitting on a tennis ball to work deep into the muscles. This causes tingling in my leg and my foot to go numb. Any ideas to help?

The tingling sounds similar to a problem I had in my lower back (slipped disc) that was pinching a nerve. It progressed to sharp/shooting pains. I went for physio which really helped, and did lots of self-massage with my TP massage ball. It took a good 8 months for it to be completely "fixed" and I still have flare ups sometimes. My physiotherapist gave me an abdominal regime to do regularly, since weak abdominal muscles can apparently cause these types of issues or make them worse.
Liz Grant from Physio One (inside One to One Fitness in Belleville) was the physiotherapist I was seeing, and she was great.

Thanks for the info. How was the slipped disc diagnosed? Was that through your doctor or physio?

I ended up getting an MRI about 4 weeks after I started physio, because the physiotherapist suspected a disc was pinching a nerve. I got into the Cobourg hospital for an MRI really quickly, and they were super nice. The results were at my doctor's office within about a week.

I have been dealing with hip/butt/groin pain for too long.
Sandy suggested I see Dr Ben Osborne who does Active Release Therapy here in Belleville (works in Trenton too) 613-966-9500. He is amazing and I know several runners who have had great success with him. He is also a chiropractor so I have had him do adjustments for me too.
Apparently patience is required too - and I'm working on that!!

I hate it when the way we are put together doesn't co-operate with our sport of choice! I guess if it was any other way, doctors would be poor.
Personally I find that when I can no longer "run through" discomfort, a visit to my RMT puts everything back to where nature intended and I start back at square one.

There are a couple things which may be causing the hip/butt pain. One of the most common things is if your pelvis/hips are not level...this causes stress to be loaded on one side and tight muscles in the butt area. The muscles (mainly the piriformis) when it spasms can pinch the sciatic nerve giving you the tingling sensation. Getting the pelvis level will take away the stress and relax the muscles...then lots of stretching will prevent it from returning. Cheers, Bryan

Thank you for making that point Bryan, I personally think it's too often overlooked as a main cause of these symptoms.
Runner7 Bryan is the best in the biz for doing this. To make an appointment call Loyalist 613-969-1913 ext 2296.

After running with sore hips/butt for a few weeks (started to bother me moreso during and after Trenton Half a couple of weeks ago), I finally went and saw my RMT Saturday morning. Lots of issues with my upper leg muscles / glutes and left hip (how it was moving ball and socket).
I am STILL feeling the effects this morning. Although I ran a medium length run yesterday and slowly warmed up my muscles and stretched well afterwards, my muscles in my hips and butt are still tender and achy today.
Is this normal???
I am wondering if I need a second opinion and should I go see Bryan or just give it a few days and see if the muscles are perhaps just bruised from the massage.

Thanks Sandy. I can't recall having this discomfort when I have had deep tissue massage on my legs (hamstrings/calves), but maybe they have never been in as bad of shape!

I second that.
As a man (naturally allergic to doctors) I have tried to "tough out" more injuries than I care to admit, but after 2 and a half years of waiting for a pulled groin to heal I finally gave in. Only 3 weeks later I was 100% again. I won't try and "tough out" any injuries anymore, and I don't think you should either.
