Has anyone ever had insomnia during training? I'm finding it difficult to fall (and stay) asleep lately. It's starting to drain my energy.

Hi April,

I've been having spells of it myself. I had a 2 week period where it seemed I hardly slept. Not bad lately, sometimes takes a while to get to sleep and usually up in the night.
Working out later in the evening doesn't help. I've found when I can't fall asleep I often feel warm and my HR is a little higher than normal resting rate. Would be curious if you found it the same with regards to Temp. and HR. If you're not sleepy they recommend getting up and reading for a while until you are sleepy then try going back to bed at that point. It's a difficult thing to troubleshoot. Lots of info on the web.

Hopefully it passes.
Good luck.

Run faster, you'll tire out soon enough.  LOL

Really, I have nothing useful to add.

If you do find out a way to conquer this, please let me know.  I've just (hopefully) gotten over 5 weeks of insomnia - going to sleep for two hours being awake for 4 and then falling into a busy sleep until the alarm wakes me.
Was (and some will say = still am) cranky, not feeling up to par and sound like a steam engine going up hill at times when I run/work out.

I always thought working out was to help, but not so for me.

I used to be the same when it came to getting a consistently good nights sleep.  I've found the following things have helped me a lot, although I have bad nights still.

- I stop watching TV about an hour before I plan to hit the hay, and read for a while until I feel tired
- Don't drink too much close to bed time - I tend to wake up to pee!
- Make sure my room is as dark as possible
- I find lavender oil sprinkled on my pillow helps me to relax (I've heard those lavender scented sachets work too) - my husband thinks lavender smells like stale beer, so if you feel that way too this may not work for you!
- Nights that I can't seem to wind down, I'll have a hot bath and go straight to bed afterward.  I find the heat of the water sucks the energy out of me, and I can relax easier.

Other than that, I've heard some people have success with melatonin, but I'm not a fan of taking pills of any kind unless it's a last resort.

Cheers,

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm hoping it's just the change in season or a phase. Hopefully it will pass.

P.S. Mike, I tried the running faster thing today, so fingers crossed.

Thanks again,
April

G'day

Stephanie has some great ideas, and in Sandy's Mar 10th Posting about Stress and Rest has good info as well.

I know this sounds like a guy comment but it could be "hormonal" as well.

Personally I've never had a problem with sleep. ;)

Peace

I read.  It doesn't matter what but it seems to clear my mind of the days worries and issues so I sleep instead of stew.
