G'day Guys,

Here is a little race report on the Snowshoe Race Bob and I did last weekend.

Weather was perfect hovering right around freezing, and even though there is not a lot of snow at home there was enough at Horseshoe Valley to justify wearing snowshoes.
The course consisted of navigating around the valley with compasses, maps and a partner, try to collect as many checkpoints as possible in 3hrs. If you were over the 3 hr mark you were deducted 10 points per minute (some teams ended up with negative points). There was 91 two person teams, that were divided up in categories, Men, Coed, Master (100years of age total), Super Masters (120years of age team total), Female and Junior. Of course the Masters was the most competitive category (my category is always the most competitive) with 19 teams, the first two masters teams placing 1st and 2nd overall. No team collected all the checkpoints.
Bob and I were nursing colds so we decided not to race as much as work on our navigating skills. We hit all but one of our intended check points and if I had of continued on our course for another 150m instead of giving up we would of hit it right on.
We ended up placing 4th masters, 19th overall and were both quite pleased with our results.
It was a hoot seeing teams running in various directions throughout the woods in this adult like treasure hunt as there was many different ideas on which was the best route to take to collect the most check points.

I would certainly recommend this race to anyone who likes to snowshoe and get out in the woods for something a little different.
Peace
Peter

Sounds like a lot of fun, might have to keep it on the radar for next year!

Congratulations guys, that does sound like fun.  Maybe one of these weekends we could get you to do a crash navigating course for those of us who are compassly challenged!

G'day Sandy,

No Problem, I know Bob would love to show people how to get lost in the woods, oops I mean how to use a compass and a map.

Actually compass skills are a good thing to know, as any good boy/girl scout will tell you.

Peace
Peter

Sorry I'm late to answer Peter, Sandy sure didn't forget him, very funny Sandy!  Come to think of it I haven't seen him for awhile..........
He was the only one to run the FatAss 50.  I'm not disrespecting him, we ran the Ottawa Army Run Half and FatAss (sort of) together.  Hey, when do I get to the "Owns Decent Shoes" stage on this forum?  Do I have to buy them at Tri and Run?

The snowshoe event sounds very tough Peter, the drag of the snow and the cold must have been very fatiguing, not to mention trying to balance temperature to avoid sweating and then chilling.

G'day Bob,

I THINK the forum designation is solely determined by number of posts.

I used to feel less than justified by my status on this forum.  Now I am humbled ...
