Safety while exercising outside or in is very important.  When exercising inside, make sure you have enough ventilation (airflow) so that you don?t over heat.  If using exercising equipment make sure someone else knows what you are doing, and that you follow the rules of use laid out in the operation manual.
When exercising outside, ensure someone knows where you are at all times and you should avoid going out on your own.  Wear weather appropriate clothing and make sure you are visible to all traffic. Obey all laws of the road making sure you are visible, including wearing light coloured, reflective clothing and ensuring drivers have seen you before crossing roadways.  DO NOT WEAR A WALKMAN.  You cannot hear what is going on around you and that makes you extremely vulnerable.  If you must listen to music, please wear the headphones around your neck and turn up the music.
Unfortunately, women have to be extra careful about running when and where it?s safe.  Here are some tips to follow.
1.   Let someone know where you are running and how long you plan to be gone.
2.   Carry identification and money for a phone call, or a cell phone.
3.   Run during daylight hours, early morning is best.
4.   Run with a partner and/or dog.
5.   Don?t run in remote areas, well lit, well traveled routes are best.
6.   DON?T run with a headset. (Important enough to say twice).
7.   Carry a whistle or self-defense spray.
8.   Don?t stop to give directions.
9.   Ignore verbal harassment.
10.   Stay alert, and don?t assume that all runners are harmless.
11.   When approaching other people fight the urge to look away, looking them directly in the face/eyes.  This will indicate that you are observant and have seen them.
12.   Make it a habit to look around you periodically, particularly when you hear noises that stand out, for example a yell or a slam.

Even if you fall on your face, at least you're moving forward!
