First off I'm as bad or WORSE than most people for ranting etc.

I can agree with the headphones diminishing an individuals awareness depending on the volume and type of headphones used. Additionally, I see nothing wrong with ASKING people to not race with there music.
But if the event allows it, then individuals can make up their own minds on the music issue.
I don't agree that headphones negatively impact a runners ability to acknowledge or appreciate the efforts of volunteers and well-wishing crowds. By that same standard would a deaf runner also be judged to be less appreciative than their hearing counterparts? Of course not!
As far as "not getting their $75 worth". That's extremely presumptuous of you to assume that only your perception of worth is the valid one.
You also commented on rude behaviour becoming commonplace in our society. I agree.
I feel you crossed the line a bit when you said that "racers don't wear headphones, only joggers".
A forum should be a place where people can discuss topics and exchange ideas, engage in spirited debates with vastly differing opinions.
In a perfect world this would be done without things getting emotional and mud being slung.
Unfortuneately we live in an imperfect world and a little tolerance goes a long way.
We all do things everyday that judged by others standards would be deemed less than ideal.
It's amazing that even within a small niche of society such as this forum with contributors all sharing a passion for running, biking and swimming that we still look for ways to fight over our differences rather than embrace our similarities.
I sincerely hope you do not take this as fuel for the fire. Some of this is in direct response to your post.
But the rest is a well intentioned reminder for everyone (especially myself) to try and be tolerant and be good to one another.
On a positive note:
Congratulations Mike and Janet. Enjoy your run in Boston
