Hi all fat ass runners!
I have registered for the 17.5 distance, and although I have run 3 half marathons and 2 marathomons. I have not ever participated in a trail run.
Knowing the Batawa hills I am feeling a bit  overwhelmed, and am looking for advice for traing ideas
what do I need to do to prepare for this event?
Looking forward to it - but feeling a little fearful

Find shoes that you don't care to use again.

Actually I prefer the flip side of Neils post and get a good pair of trail shoes. Mud will wash off, but a pair shoes designed for trail running will give you the support needed for the rigors of the trail, the durability to handle the conditions, the protection built into the shoes will help protect your feet. Plus with the additional traction you may be able to run conditions that have some people barely walking.
Sounds a bit like an ad for the folks at triandrun but it has worked for me. If you find you can't justify buying a pair of shoes just for one trail race, they make for excellant running shoes for winter use, running in the snow and slush.

Next step is experience, that is to say get out and run some trails. Nothing works better then sports specificity.

Hope this helps

Peace
Peter

I really wanted to just post "You should be scared." and leave it at that, but the reality is, trail running is great fun.  Know that you will not be running the same pace you ran on the road (but, neither will anyone else), and your feet are probably going to get wet.  The hills are no worse than Oak Hill, or the Bay Bridge (in Belleville), and the scenery is much nicer.  Other than that, yeah, run some trails, wear some good shoes (you will appreciate the extra traction.)

Have a great time, hope to see you there.

I am a newbie to the Fat Ass this year as well and decided to focus on the fun so only signed up for the 7.5K.

The best advice I have received is "don't wear a pair of running shoes you might want to wear again".  Apparently, depending on the weather leading up to the weekend, (we) might find ourselves not only conquering trails with rocks and mud, but also wading through deep water.  (Someone suggested losing a shoe is not unheard of and I have also been told that the "award for the muddiest person" is not a joke!)

I did lots of trail running in high school (too many years ago to mention) and am REALLY looking foward to this event.

I have wont he award for the muddiest person, and I willhave to agree with Newt on the shoes! I have never thrown out a pair of shoes after doing trails, they usually get pretty clean running through the water (some spots it can't be avoided, and just easier to bite the bullet and get wet wink). So it is going to be slower going than the road, "zoning out " running trails is not a good thing, try to keep your eyes on the path a little bit ahead, not watching your feet, this way you may be able to avoid rocks and logs. Most of all, have fun, and enjoy the aid stations!

After PEC we get out and run the Fat Ass trails...everyone is welcome.  Our first trail run will be the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend.  Watch here for time and details.

Ah yes.  The aid stations.  My running buddy tells me that's why she signed up!

I will keep an eye for trail run times on Sundays, but may not be able to make it there.  Thanksgiving for sure (away).  And maybe I am weird (I said MAYBE!), but for running any kind of race for the first time, I like the element of the unknown.  Mind over matter and I can't psych myself out that way.

As for Batawa ... I have skiied there on occasion so already have ALL kinds of scenarios running through my head!!  7.5K.  It's going to be fun!  7.5K.  It's going to be fun!
