What would you try if you knew you couldn?t fail?  Now think about learning to run, or restarting your running habit with a refresher course.  Learning to run can be a fun, challenging, exciting way to feel accomplished, lose weight, get fit and meet new like-minded friends.
Learn to run groups are geared towards individuals who have little or no experience with running, and help them to ease into their new activity.  Lectures on topics such as proper clothing, running shoes, breathing and injuries are usually part of the agenda.  Belonging to a group can be intimidating initially as new runners tend to think that others are farther ahead of themselves.  This same group dynamic however proves to not only provide others who run at the same pace, but the added incentive of motivation.  One of the biggest motivators for all runners, not just beginners, is knowing someone else is waiting for you to run with them, an excellent push to get you out the door when you would rather stay in your cozy bed or on your comfortable couch.

The Mid Summer Nights Run 15k/30k is a unique race held every August on a Saturday night.  Runners are sent off into the dusk at 5:30 or 6:30pm and often finish in the dark.  Running for fun, Sick Kids Foundation and to wear a costume athletes are treated to unique finisher?s medals, numerous give-aways and a post race beer garden.  In the 15k John Barry completed his adventure in 1:34:38 and was joined by Belinda Raycraft (1:57:44), Diane Coates (1:26:12), Dave Penny (1:02:28), Brenda Young (1:58:55), and Louise Oliver (1:24:02).  Christine Tomin (3:10:15), Julie Soule (3:23:25), and Michelle Kitchener (2:50:40) completed the 30k.
At the Orillia Try a Tri Nadine Brasier (1:04:27), Darryl Rolfe (54:26) and Sarah Vader (1:02:14) completed the 375 swim, 10k cycle and 2.5k run while Beth Vader (2:03:16) and Brenda Brownlee (2:31:34) raced the Tri (750/33/7).
At Dunrobin near Ottawa Adam Doxtator crossed the finish line fifth overall, second in his division to claim a spot in the Ontario Summer Games for 2010.  Adam raced the 400/15/4 course in 56:40.
September 20 will be a busy racing day in the area but if you?re up for it you could hit one and possibly two of the local races.  The Quinte Mall Rock & Roll Fun Run hits the streets at 9:00am for walkers and 9:20am for runners.  This fun event featuring Tyler Wilkinson, Belleville Bulls players and local musicians benefits the BGH Medical Equipment Fund.  All participants registered by September 3 will receive a goodie bag and tech t-shirt.  After cruising the 5k, hop across the river and join the Belleville Runners Club for its annual Fall Classic 10k/half marathon in preparation for the County Marathon to be held on October 4th.    What to race in a new area?  Plan to run either the 5 or 10k at the Sandbanks Fall Getaway.  Race applications and details can be picked up at Tri & Run Sports in Trenton.
