My eight year old daughter competed in her first triathlon in Courtice last weekend, and placed 6th in her age group...pretty fantastic considering it was her first, and from what I can see, one of the longest distances for a KOS race in this area. (her age group was 100m/5k/1.5k)

From the time she grudgingly decided she would do this, training was like pulling teeth. The only thing we could get her to do without complaining was swimming. It was battle after battle, especially to get her to run. (Like her mama in that respect) But almost immediately after crossing the finish line in Courtice, she asked if I could sign her up for Peterborough the next weekend! She placed 4th in Peterborough, a mere 9 seconds out of third.

Hooked!! And I have to say - it has motivated me more than I thought possible. Out there running with her, telling her not to quit, not to give in and watching her push her limits and succeed, makes it reeeeally hard for me to justify any excuse to quit that comes into my head. Here I thought I was being her role model.....I think it's the other way around!

Cheers,
L.

So good to hear.  Congratulations to both you and your daughter.  Having a daughter myself I know from experience that it begins with you and continues with her.  Keep up the great work!

I love stories like this!  Tell her congratulations on her excellent results.  Isn't it funny how you were trying to motivate her and in turn she ended up motivating you?

People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can't find them, make them.

Thanks, I will!
It's amazing, really. I planned on doing three tri's this year...two GIT's and a sprint. As the season has progressed, I seriously started to reconsider the sprint, and several times was tempted to switch to the GIT which is on the same day. But after everything I have said to her, and everything I did to push her to see she COULD do it, how can I back out? So, my first sprint is this Sunday. Am I ready? Not as ready as I could be. Will I finish well? Not likely. But will I finish? You bet your ...!!! And now I'm signed up for my first 10k in October. It's baby steps, but steps none the less!
