There are two great local events coming up in June that are an absolute must do.  On Friday June 12th the 23rd Surf n Turf Relay Race, Tin Mate or Tin Man will be held starting at CFB Trenton.  The relay is an eight leg, eight person event that takes participants over 60km of Quinte West.  Teams can be all male, all female, mixed, juniors or masters.  Seven members will complete one leg while one participant will complete one leg plus the finishing three kilometre run.
Starting with a 9k run around the Base members will switch at Bain Park for a two person 4k canoe up the Trent River to Quinte Conservation building.  The next participant will cycle 15k north on Stockdale Road to the Frankford Industrial Park where the 5k trail runner will take over, running a mostly out and back course on the rail bed.  Arriving back in the parking lot the mountain biker will cover a 10k hilly, wet, mucky route through and around the Bata Hills, ending happily in the Glen Miller Church parking lot where the next runner heads across the Glen Miller Bridge, south on Glen Miller Road to Hamilton Road, RCAF Road to the Base pool.  The teams? swimmer will enter the water for a 500m swim tagging off with for a final 3k run back to the South Side of the Base for the finish.
If you choose to do the Tin Mate you and your ?mate? will cover the same distances and legs in any order you choose with the only exception being a one person kayak in place of the canoe.  The Tinman does the entire event solo.  If you are wondering how they keep track of all the legs, times and hand offs; the event is chip timed.  This requires team mates to hand off the timing chip which is attached by a Velcro strap, usually a quick process.
The fastest Tinman last year was Peter Phillips in 3:19:53 and the fastest team was Bit with Byte in 3:29:28, the Tin Mate category is new for 2009.  I guarantee that regardless of whether you get a team together or go for the duo or solo events...this race will be the most fun you have all season.   For a complete set of rules and to register go to http://www.cfcommunitygateway.com/en/Trenton/news/SurfTurf_e.asp
The Prince Edward Fitness and Aquatic Center will again be the host and site for the County Kids of Steel Triathlon to be held on Sunday May 31, 2009.  Open to children ages 6-17 years, this is the perfect site to give triathlon a tri.  Beginning with a pool swim, racers exit the building to transition area and mount their bikes for a cycle through closed roads back to transition.  Leaving their rides behind participants head to the rail bed for an out and back run.  For registration, race distances per age group and course maps go to http://www.pefac.ca/kos.html.   Whether your child will be racing or you?re just out to watch, the organizers are always looking for volunteers.
