Hi Everyone!!! I have been having problems with really tight hamstring muscles, no matter how much I stretch it just doesn't seem to be enough, and now I am starting to have knee pain . Does anyone know of a really good Massage Therapist? (who works with Runner and Triathletes) that can help me with this problem and help to prevent any further injuries. Thanks Terri Reynolds

Hey Terri, I use Barb Wykes from Belleville who also does a couple of days a week in Trenton at the Clubhouse. You can get her at 613-969-0002. Let her know how you heard about her and she'll tourture you like she does the rest of us!!!

Rebecca Ryan from Lolly Lodge is excellent as well. She'll have suggested stretches for you, too. Besides massage, have you tried yoga? If not, here's a few that are good for hams: downward dog, standing forward fold, ragdoll, seated forward fold, seated open-legged forward fold, head beyond the knee.... be sure, for the standing poses, to NOT lock your knees and to stop any time you have pain. Hope that helps! Kim

I've heard great things about Rebecca as well, glad you recommended her.
Downward facing dog should be something every runner does on a regular basis!!! You may have to demonstrate ragdoll for me though Kim, I don't think I've done it.

Rag Doll - the feet are 2-3 feet apart, knees bent slightly. Bending forward with arms dangling or holding the insides of each opposite elbo, head relaxed towards the floor. It's meant to relax the back and neck but for those with REALLY tight hamstrings it's usually a good stretch there as well. It's awesome for stress.

Rebecca is really good. I've gone to her in the past. I use to go every second week to her. I just got too busy and stopped going, then got out of the habit. She really hurts you. She's about 5 foot nothing and weighs about 90 lbs soaking wet, but don't let that fool you. She finds all the owies quite nicely. She's located on Highway 33 just south of the bridge north of the 401, on the West side of the Trent Severn. Her number is 613-392-6177
I'm going to have to get my a** in gear and get back there.

I run a marathon every spring and several half's thru the year and I SWEAR by yoga. I truly believe that if you do yoga on a regular basis you will save lots of therapy $$$...but that's just been my experience. I do a lot more yoga than usual when training for my marathons and have never had a problem with tight muscles. I don't even feel an ache the day after my long runs.

I have some very good friends that are yogi's and swear by it, I also recommend that all runners give it a try. I however do not have the patience for yoga (except downward facing dog) but I LOVE my massage therapist and would get a second job to fund my regular massages. Luckily I haven't had to do this because I don't know when I'd fit it in or what I'd do, but I do use and swear by my Trigger point Rollers. I have been combining these two modalities for over three years and have completed numerous marathons, ultras, half ironmen, an ironman and a 100 miler with no injuries. But that's just me!

I hear you Sandy, I don't exactly have the patience for yoga either. I'm a bit of a cardio junkie you could say. That's why you only see me doing yoga from Feb-May!! I call it "marathon" season! The instructors at my gym literally say, when they see me in their class, "Oh, it must be marathon time!". As soon as the marathon is over I fall off the proverbial yoga wagon. So I guess I'm not quite a "yogi"...maybe when I get older and don't feel I need the cardio as much...who knows. I don't seem to get the same "pleasure" out of yoga that the real afficionados seem to get. I find I'm bored...unless I'm doing a stretch that feels unusually good...say after a long run or something. But for the most part I find it a tad boring.

I started going to Ann McIsaac-Miller (RMT in Belleville) about a month ago with a severe hip problem. I had immediate results and just went and saw her again yesterday. She worked primarily on my calves (which haven't felt this good in I don't know how long) and that upper leg muscle that wraps itself around.
She likes to refer to herself as the "Queen of Pain", but she's well worth the suffering. I know that she works on other local runners and marathoners.
She can be reached at 613 966 1694
