Is it normal for me to do these things like....clean my running shoes and make them nice and pretty and white before the marathon. Then go through my running clothes for flaws, and pack, repack and pack again, days before the race. I've been a clean- a - holic for days.....can't walk by anything on the floor or ground without picking it up. I recall feeling this way when I was pregnant with my son and was due any day. I think they called that nesting. Am I nesting for a marathon. Maybe I'm weird. Got a dirty house......I'm available.

Hey Shannon, yep door's always open at our house! You sure do pick a funny way to deal with you're taper though! Good luck this weekend. Will be waiting to see your results as you cross the finish line. Just remember how far you have come, and that you are soooooo ready for this. May you're shoes be swift, wind at your back, and short lines at the porta potties . Can't wait to read your about your marathon experience.

I can leave my door open as well! You'll be so busy though, you'll probably forget to go to Mississauga! Shannon, I know you are going to do great on Sunday. You are more than ready! And if it gets tough in spots, remember we are back here thinking of you and cheering you on! Most of all, have fun!

I left my door unlocked today but when I got home, the house still looked as dirty and messy as it did when I left. What happened to you Shannon???

okay, here's my question...how in the heck do you make your shoes "pretty and white" for a marathon? Each time I do one, I am always amazed at the starting line because so many (women mostly) look as if they are wearing shoes they bought the day before. I know a runner would never in a million years try breaking in a brand new pair of shoes in a marathon...so how do all these people keep their shoes so clean? My shoes are so dirty after only a couple of long runs. Sometimes I look down at my shoes while in the corral and I feel almost embarrassed! Like the little kid at school who had clothes that were dirty and ill fitting...I feel just like that kid! lol
So what's the secret Shannon, how do you get your shoes WHITE? Do tell...

Well, I'm not Shannon - I think she is probably preoccupied in getting settled in Mississauga about now. But actually I don't like it when my shoes ARE white and new. I have had more people comment on it --- like - "Hey, did you just get new shoes?" and for some reason it bugs me. I like them to look like I've done something in them!

You would be surprised Julie (or maybe not) at how many people do break THE golden rule of marathoning and wear all the new stuff they bought at the expo. I too have done this but ONLY with the same size and style of shoes I've been wearing FOREVER (or at least 11 years) so it's never a surprise to my feet. HOWEVER I still advise everyone else to at least get a couple of trial runs on their new shoes before going 21 or 42K, you know the old "do as I say......"

I know what you mean about wearing new shoes as long as they're the same size and style you've been wearing for years. I have NEVER had a pair of my trusty Asics, size 9, ever even give me a teeny, tiny problem with the first wearing. But my God, I still don't think i could chance it after 20 weeks of training. But i still want to know...is it okay to wash your shoes in the machine? That is the only way I can get mine white....a tiny bit of bleach, some spot remover and once through the gentle cycle. And let me tell you, they are really clean and really white. BUT I only do it with shoes that I'm no longer "training" in. When I buy a new pair, I'll wash the old. So is it okay to do it with shoes I'm presently training in, and that have a lot of mileage left on them? I'd like to think that 15 min. bouncing around on a gentle cycle can't cause any more wear and tear than a 3 hour run on the pavement can it?? Does anyone know?

Washing them in a machine breaks down the midsole plan and simple. The midsole is the part that provides cushioning/stability. IF you must wash them it is recommended to hand wash them then stuff with newspaper. If they are your "on the way out" shoes probably no harn done in the long run (no pun intended) but it's not recommended. I'm still unclear as to the neccessity for white/clean shoes but that is just me!
