I'm running my first 1/2 in Ottawa in 6 weeks (YIKES!) .. and i'm thinking ahead.. I'm wanting to do PEC in the fall.. but wondered.. i won't be able to run a full.. but could I walk it? has anyone done that? How would you train to walk that far, but keep your running fitness too?
Thoughts?

I know lots of people do walk them -- there was a whole bunch of people from Newfoundland who walked the NCM the year I did it - and they carried flags and sang the whole time too!
I can't give you advice in how to train for it, but I am sure you will get lots.
I am curious, why do you think that you couldn't run the full? If I could, you could! Or can you not do a part run, part walk? You know, ten minutes running, five minutes walking?

I may be walking my London half...if my bad luck continues. I'm sure lots of people have walked a full before.

I walked my first 1/2. And it was on purpose. Hadn't really started running yet. And I walked most of my first full at Disney. That wasn't on purpose. Had a few problems that didn't help when I ran. So I walked quite a bit of it.
You shouldn't have any problems Laurie in doing a full. You are a strong runner. Keep up your training and you will accomplish any goal that you set your mind too.

I think it's totally normal to have uncertainties. I know, I always do when a big race was coming up. But you know what? It's amazing how we always pull through.

Lauire, you can do it. I understand your reservations, as I have signed up for my full marathon and it does seem like a goal that may be unattainable, but with training and support you can do it.

I walked quite a bit of the Disney full. I think you could definately run a full, with the proper training of course. And as Jane said you can always walk/run because there's no rule that says you have to run. So, if you do run PEC we'll all be there to cheer you on, shed some tears with you at the finish line!

You can definately run the Full in the fall. I ran my first full only 13 weeks after my longest run had been 10k. (There's a book on that subject) If you're at 16 already a full in 5 months will be a cake walk for you. Just don't take the easy way when training. Remember, it's easier to pay the pain of a marathon in the installments of training, then by lump sum payment on race day.

Regret nothing, even the bad parts contributed to your arrival in this spot, and if dirt is down, then you're still winning. Keep racing.

Laurie, if I can run one you can! I ran my one and only full marathon at PEC last year and I certainly walked some of it. I started training with Sandy in June for the marathon in October, so you have lots of time to train. I'm going to volunteer this year, so I will be there to cheer you on too! Loved your quote Mike!
