Saturday dawned cold and wet but thank goodness there was no snow on the ground as the prior few days offered.  Our group met at the Wooler  car park at 7:00 am and were soon off to the Zoo for our planned 10k run.  With only a short pit stop at the 401 Tim?s we made good progress and were soon at out destination.

The wind was blowing and without much in the line sun we arrived at bag pickup and from there proceeded to line up for bathrooms and organise ourselves for the run.  Wasn?t long and we were off.  What a throng of people there was.  Just before the gun went off I felt a tap on my shoulder and was surprised to see Tracy Bray standing beside me.  She is a friend of Bill and Sue?s and also a physio therapist in Belleville ( I believe.  Sue or Bill can correct me if I am wrong).

We had a real nice time running through the zoo and chit chatting about this and that.  We managed to keep pace with Stacey and Heather as a couple of pictures that Adam had taken shows. (Petra and Jane were flying along somewhere up ahead).  I don?t think that Adam even knew that we were behind them.  We saw lots of animals along route and it wasn?t long before I certainly had warmed up enough to remove one of my shirts.

Somewhere around the 5k mark Tracy seemed to be having some problems and was slowing down a bit and shortly after 6k  told me to go ahead.  I asked her if she was going to be OK and she said that she would.  I don?t think that I have ever left anyone before.  Was an odd feeling.  I managed to catch up with Heather and Stacey and we pretty much finished the last 4k or so together.

I don?t think that the crowd ever thinned.  You could not get by most people as the paths were so congested.  You could only pass along the grass in some places.  The finish line wasn?t any better, people everywhere.  As I crossed the finish line I saw Petra and then Jane.  Both with big smiles.  They had an awesome race.  I looked for Tracy but there was too many people.  I checked the results that have been posted and found her results so I now know that she finished ok.  Thanks Tracy for running with me.  Sorry we missed each other at the other end.

The post race events were a lot of fun.  There was bagels, bananas, apples, cookies, lots of juice (yummy), gels, calcium pills, free tattoos, (Petra and I got one).  We also had our group picture taken which should be out within the week I hope.   Then we were off back to the car and out usual scheduled trip to Costco.  We topped the day off with seeing some awesome rainbows on the drive home.

Thanks Sandy for working for my.  I hope to organise my schedule a bit better from here on in.  Thanks Adam for your usual wonderful photo story of our days events as well as Jane?s photos.  It always makes it so much nicer to be able to share these events through pics.  Thanks to Petra for driving and the Heather and Stacey for keeping me company the last leg of the run.  Can?t wait for our next outing.

Great report Cathy!
That's a race I've always wanted to do, but never made a spot in my fall schedule for.  You make it sound like so much fun, maybe I'll make it a priority next year.

Good running,

Mike

My report is coming -- I had to sneak into work so I can read the website, as Adam has our computer pulled apart!  Major problems with it.  If Heather will be a nice daughter, and if she doesn't need her laptop for school work tonight, maybe she will let me use it and I can compose and post my report.   wink

Adam's photos are here http://www.adampaulin.ca/

I tried uploading mine last night but they didn't work.  Will try again tonight (if I can use Heather's laptop, or if mine gets fixed).

I see that the web site for the race results has 4 photo's up in anticipation of the whole bunch of them being on there.  The last of the 4 is a shot of the start line and there is definately a Heather, Jane, Stacey and a Petra in full view on the right hand side of the shot.  COOL

Finally, here is my report on the Zoo run.

Well, our day started in the dark and cold with pouring rain --- luckily it got light and cleared pretty quickly, within 10 minutes after we got on the road, because Petra was threatening to drive 60KPH all the way to the run.  At that rate, we wouldn't have got there on time!

Arrived at 8:30, picked up our race packages.  This must be the year of the bright coloured shirts as we got a really bright yellow one.  Stood in line for the port-a-potties - good thing too because after that the line ups got REALLY long!  I still can't understand people (in this case men) who feel they should sit in the port-a-potty for ten minutes and contemplate life!!  Anyhow, got into the starting area and met a new Running Mania friend, Annette and her friend Catherine.  We got a group photo taken by another nice runner before we started out.

We are:  Annette, Catherine, Heather, Cathy, Petra, Jane and Stacey.

It was FREEZING but good running weather though!  By the time we were a couple of kms into the run, my hoodie was off and tied around my waist.  It was very crowded and we seemed to dodge other runners the whole race.  I ended up with Petra, Heather and Stacey were together and Cathy ran with Tracy.

The run was hilly - the same as it was last year.  Lots of curves and loops around too.  At 5K Petra and I were at 31 min.  Guess we wouldn't be breaking our time from last year which was 59:50 or something like that (I can't find last year's results but know it was JUST under an hour).

There were only two water stations and we walked through them.  At about 7.5K I got a charlie horse in my right calf!  OW, OW, OW that hurt!  I had actually had one in the van on the way down too.  Petra asked if I wanted to walk and I said NO.  I still had hopes we would beat last year's time, even though I had said I was just going out to run for fun.  This seems to be a trend for me at the Zoo run as I said the same thing last year.  Either that or Petra just makes me want to run as hard as I can.  Not that either of us are competitive (we aren't because we weren't trying to beat each other!).  Anyhow  I tried drinking alot of my cytomax - thinking my charlie horse could be dehydration.  Maybe it was, who knows?  Anyhow, I kept going and it didn't get any worse.  My heart rate was about 173 for most of the race -- those hills really play havoc with the old heart rate.

We passed a whole lot of people throughout the race, right up to the very end.  You can hear the finish line for the last km or two and you keep thinking you are going to get there and then you don't.  Finally, we heard them saying, if you want to finish in under an hour, you better hurry!  Hmmm, this was like deja vu, exactly the same as last year.  After I hurt my calf I had told Petra I didn't think I could sprint at the end, but I managed to.  And we finished in under an hour again!  Took about a minute off last year's time.  Even though we came over the finish line together, Petra beat me by half a second!  She must have started a half second behind me or something.

821 0:59:37.8  5:58 0:58:47.4  440 CLEMENT, JANE                         TRENTON            336/1059  36/87   Women 45 - 49

I am pretty happy with my performance for my last race in this age group.  Not a PB (I had this crazy race about four years ago when I was doing speed training and actually ran a 10K in just under 53 minutes   and don't expect to be doing THAT again anytime soon).  But still respectable for an old girl.

And I managed to get a photo of Heather and Stacey coming over the finish line in 1:01.32 which is a great time for this race.

The first thing Heather said to me was "You told me it wasn't ALL that hilly!"   Sorry Heather....

Then it was off to Costco to eat free samples, drop a bunch of cash and to Tim's for a bite to eat before heading home....

Another great day -- what more can I say??

Thanks for mentioning the photo Cathy.  Wow, we are famous - well half of me is!   laugh

By the way, Sandy, I posted the two photos on the RM site and have had two people ask me about the Mizuno clothes.  I may be calling you about them.....

Yes, I am looking forward to going into my new age group, Derek.  Strange, aren't I???   wink

No, my time was 58:47 yesterday.  The result line is a little hard to read, I know.  I had under 53 minutes once, a long time ago - about four years ago when I was doing speed training.  I don't think that will happen again any time soon - unless I do regular speed training again.

Great race reports guys.  I am hoping that maybe next year I will be able to do this race, as I love going to the zoo.

Heather, did you ever get a chance to see that picture that was taken of all of us at the zoo?  Just thought about that yesterday and wondered if I had missed it.
