Dave you must have missed the conversation on Sunday.  You can't give someone poision ivy.  It's not like a cold or flu.  It is your and yours alone to enjoy.

Well, there is another "never" that you can cross off your list.

(I have never gotten poision ivy)

I would be VERY careful, Miss Cathy......

Dave, where is it (or do I want to know?)????  And where do you think you caught it?  Is there like an incubation period?  Like two days or five days, or what?

I was talking to Elizabeth today and she said it is extremely plentiful this year.  She said it is spreading everywhere.  BEWARE.

Poor Dave, where do you think you picked it up?

I heard the Base trail is pretty rampid too, I bumped into Joanne (tuesday night walker/runner), she said she may have it.

If it were a precious crop we would all be rich. I aquired my lovely itch from the forest to which i romp through on my long runs with my Port Hope friends Brian and Paul , oh btw they are covered in it too.Elizebeth is correct its a great year for it, its growing very big too.The stupid thing is we knew it was there but none of us had ever gotten it before..never say never..As to your incubation question Jane, its 2 - 3 days before your going insane, i have been on the net every night learning about this stuff, one of the methods i used worked pretty well but i wont post it here...is pretty drastic and painful, you wanna know just ask me.But the best yet is a plant called "jewel weed" or " touch me nots", long thick stalks with tiny orange flowers, break open the stalk and rub it it very hard, breaking the blisters and getting this stuff inside, its the only way you can sleep, it`ll take the itch away for about 8 -9 hrs, and help dry it up..ironically enough it grows around poison ivy...stands to reason..happy scratching...Dave. rolleyes rolleyes

To scratch or not to scratch that is the question.

Dave I know what you are going through,  did you try to wash in tide and a touch of bleach.  It worked well for me, but not so well for Sue.

I'm not sure how you could get it on the Base trail though Shannon, unless you decided to wander off into the bushes way off along the side.  I don't think I have gotten close enough to any type of plant on the gravel part of trail that I could rub against anything....

I guess it is wise to just avoid the woody areas for now -- especially since I don't want poison ivy AND deerfly bites!

Cathy were you talking about YOU had never had poison ivy, or Dave never had???

No, no, no.  The "I have never gotten poison ivy" quote was what I thought that Dave had said the other day when two of our runners were discussing their itching mass.

I am sure that some day I will get it.  Just the price of being alive.
Dave can now cross that one off his list.  Mine still awaits to be done.

There are a lot of myths about poison ivy, how it spreads, how to treat it etc.  Basically it is an allergic reaction to the oil of the plant.  You will only break out in spots that touch the oil.  You can not scratch a patch of inflamed skin then transfer that to another part of skin, therefore you can't "give" it to someone.  It will spread because you have touched the oil again.  For example you run in the woods and get oil on your shoes, you untie your shoes, get oil on your hands, scratch your leg and poof-allergic reaction.  Two weeks from now you put the same shoes on and because you haven't washed your laces- MORE OIL to spread.  Other ways are your dog goes through a patch, you pet the dog-voila-poision ivy.

Because it is an allergic reaction similar to mosquito bites you can not burn it off a la bleach, you have to control the itch with topicals (cortisones) and orals (Benadryl).  Scratching inflames the area and then infection sets in which gives it the gross look most people progress to.  The best thing to do is wash your legs and hands throughly with a dish soap like Sunlight immediately after running or biking through ivy areas, wash your laces and all clothing including hats and don't scratch.

Another myth David is if you get it you'll have it for 7 years straight.
